The New Prince (a Darkening plot)

via Daily Prompt: Replacement

When the Rebellion still trusted him- when they were still at war with the Royals- when he was still their leader, there was one person he feared the most. His brother.

Jealousy had always run through the family. His grandparents on his father’s side had tried to poison his father when he was young. The plan failed- King Zain was a Darkling and Darklings were not to be trifled with. Zain himself had murdered his older brother when he ascended to the throne, thus clearing a path for him to the title of King.

And now he, the former leader of the Rebellion and newfound Darkling, would get rid of all threats to his inheritance of the throne- including taking down his younger brother Prince Sean.

Sean had always been the favorite son. Born with the powers of a Mezma Darkling, he’d been the King’s and Queen’s satisfaction after their disappointment with their first son. Soon it became more and more apparent that Sean would be the proper heir to the throne.

So the future leader of the Rebellion had been afraid. And he was right to be afraid. Several years later, he was branded useless and exiled from the Black Palace. Why his parents didn’t just kill him on the spot, he didn’t know. Maybe they were hoping he’d gain his powers later on? Maybe they were hoping he’d die in a skirmish between Balance and the Underlings?

He’d been so afraid of Sean back then. There was always a possibility that his younger brother would behead him someday or brainwash his mind to kill himself. Mind control was a typical skill used by Mezma Darklings so it wouldn’t have been a surprise. His parents would have gladly allowed him to be Sean’s test subject.

But not anymore. He was immune to those powers now. Shadows fogged his mind, blinding mind control, and his hidden attack and shapeshifting ability could stump any Darkling, let alone a human. He was the rarest of the rare- a Shaded Darkling.

Now it was Sean’s turn to be afraid. Because hidden behind every shadow, in every corner, through every hallway were eyes- whispering, watching, and waiting.

The semester has finally ended. Our electives are changing and some of our schedules as well. Full year electives stay the same. I was supposed to be a full year too.

I got off my carpool and entered the school grounds. My friend Timi waved me over with her usual Timi-like smile. Then she went back to strangling Rain.

“What in the world?” I blinked as Timi threw herself on Rain’s back.

“Rain caught me on snapchat and she’s going to post it on her story!” explained Timi. She shot Rain a look.

“I never said that!” Rain protested.

“Yeah right.” Timi rolled her eyes. They lit up when she spotted another of her friends and was off in a flash.

“Where’s the picture?” I asked. Rain slipped out her phone and showed me a horrified Timi in the snapchat dog filter. I laughed.

“Definitely post it,” I said. Rain nodded her head in agreement and started tapping on the screen.

The bell echoed its long low ring through the throng of students. We headed our separate ways, Rain to the locker rooms and me to the thirty’s wing. As usual, I was the first to walk through the door.

My elective teacher Hieitan shot me a look from her seat in front of the computer.

“What are you doing here?” she asked, glaring at me.

I stopped short and answered stupidly, “Huh?”

“You didn’t know?” Hieitan smiled innocently. “You’ve been replaced.”

“Huh?” was my answer again.

Hieitan’s smile faltered a bit. “Replaced. Understand? You’re in computers now.”

I was about to say another monosyllable answer when I remembered. My original elective was supposed to be full year. From the very first day, Hieitan and I didn’t get along well. And, as the teacher, she had the upper hand. So she had talked to my parents and switched me out of her class. Into computers. She hated me that much.

Having wasted too much time in my confusion, I hurried to the twenty’s wing, which was across the school. I had one foot through the door when the tardy bell rang. Saved.

In the locker rooms, Preya Martinez from my original elective came up to me with a disappointed look on her face.

“You were replaced!” she exclaimed.

“Don’t state the obvious,” I answered gloomily.

“Replaced!” she repeated. “By Star Tang!”

“Star?” I frowned. “Why would she want my elective?”

“Her mom is Hieitan’s childhood friend. And your elective had a limited amount of spots,” said Preya.

“No wonder.” I change into my PE clothes and stepped outside into the freezing cold.

“Replaced,” I whispered in the chilling wind. “Brilliant.”

The angel was born

Beautiful, treasured, gifted

The light among

Many loved her at first

Sight was blinded by

Beauty awakened by

Darkness in her

Heart was like sinister

Serpent slithering through

Lush meadow and the sun’s

Light supposed to protect us from

The darkness was

Hidden under pure, white

Wings take flight to the morning

Sky full of red

Ravens’ wings dipped in

Blood of the angel pure.

Blood of the devil pure.

Not So Simple Anymore (a Darkening plot)

She sat behind the bars on the cold, lifeless floor. Moonlight seeping from the small square window illuminated her downcast eyes. She hugged her knees tighter to her chest and leaned her back uncomfortably against the icy, bare walls.

She heard him before she saw him; the door opened slowly, creaking on its neglected hinges. He took a hesitant step forward, eyeing the dark prisons lined up on each side. Hungry eyes glinted back from the shadows, full of fear, hatred, despair.

His gaze settled on the jail at the far end of the prison. Her jail. He bit his lip and strode forward, ignoring the bony fingers that tried to claw at his legs only to shrink back at the dark energy spilling from him like waves. He was now a Darkling, after all.

She didn’t move when the bars slid to the ground with a flick of his hand. His eyes searched her face for a sign, anything; anything that would give him a clue as to what she felt now. Her face was as stony as ever, like it had always been the day his heart turned black.

He crouched down in front of her, willing her to look him in the eye. She stared at the floor. He wanted desperately to force her to acknowledge him, to control her actions and make her smile for the first time in days.

But that would’ve been wrong. And he didn’t want to harm her any more than what he’d already done.

Slowly, he lifted a hand towards her dark hair.

Almost immediately, cold fingers curled around his wrist in a firm grip. There was a stinging blur across his face and blood gushed into his mouth. The fingers released their hold and he stumbled back.

His red eyes widened in surprise. Something wet was dripping down the corner of his lips. Staring at the ground, he lifted a hand to his mouth. It came away smeared with red. Touching his throbbing cheek, he looked up.

Her eyes burned the color of the sun, glowing a blinding golden yellow. Her fierce gaze held his crimson one and burned through his pupils, to the back of his head. He resisted the urge to cry out. Fireworks were exploding in his head, lighting up and exposing his tainted heart. He needed to look away. He had to look away.

Please, he begged silently.

Agonizing seconds past before she softened. The yellow faded to their original deep brown and she lowered her head, almost in defeat.

Why? He frowned at her. He had never felt so much pain, not since he became a Darkling. He realized he’d almost forgotten that she had the same powers as him too. The same darkness in her heart.

“I guess,” he whispered, “things aren’t so simple anymore.”

She didn’t reply.

He stood, stepped out of her prison, and strode away, flicking his hand as he passed.

The bars slid towards the ceiling and connected with an echoing shudder.

Ten Words She Wanted Him to Know (a Darkening plot)

via Daily Prompt: Ten

If she were to sum up how her life has been from the moment she met him to the day he killed them all, she would say it in ten words. If she ever had the chance to tell him those ten words or if he ever had the time to see her again, they would spill out of her mouth, her dry, cracked lips.

Why does my heart love one who is so dangerous?

He Was Their Destruction (a Darkening plot)

destruction-005via Daily Prompt: Devastation

His fingers brushed against the core and everything changed.

That was the moment when the future altered its course to a new path. A Darkling path. He felt the power vibrate down his arm, through his legs, reaching his heart. It was a spot at first, like a drop of water on a blank piece of paper. Then it began to pour. Onto his soul, black poison rained down and drenched him in power. It stretched its tendrils into his mind and he opened his mouth in a silent scream.

Watching from his side, helpless, bleeding, was her. Her eyes took in the change in his look, his clothes, everything. His hair grew longer. Then the color began to fade from the black strands. Starting from the tip, it was as if the ink was slowly draining from his hair, turning it white. When she looked closer, she realized it was blonde, the lightest shade of blonde she’d ever seen. The blonde of a Kyren.

His black Rebellion uniform was gone too. In its place was a long white jacket made of silk that shone in the piercing light. Golden buttons lined the front, fastened together with matching golden ribbons. His boots were white too, laced with bright gold.

The person she had known before was gone. This was not him. Someone had come out of him; someone she never knew existed.

Until now.

He opened his eyes. Blazing red shot out of his pupils like flames licking at her face. The eyes of a Kyren heir. She clutched her bleeding bullet wound, feeling the fire intensify.

He smiled.

This was the downfall of the Rebellion. In the end, Balance would not destroy their greatest enemy. Their destruction would be him. He who led his men to victory. He who trained her to be what she thought she would never become. He who had become the closest friend she’d ever had.

He who would destroy everything he ever created.

I believe it to be best if you read my other post “He Didn’t See Her Coming” before this one. It’ll make more sense. Hopefully.

He Didn’t See Her Coming (a Darkening plot)

oversight

via Daily Prompt: Oversight

His plan had been perfect.

Soon, all his struggles would be over. He wouldn’t have to worry about the entire Rebellion’s future in the palm of his hand. His fingers would curl, slowly at first, but inevitably. And when they closed into a fist, power would engulf him and he would become a Royal. A Darkling. What he’d always wanted to be.

That plan had been perfect.

But he hadn’t seen her coming.

The day he ran through the door to the human world and stepped into her house, her living room. The day she came down the stairs, hair uncombed, old baseball bat in hand, and found him standing at the kitchen table. The day he escaped through the same door back into the Dark World and left it open for her.

He forgot to close it. So she followed him.

He’d overlooked everything about her. She wasn’t supposed to follow him. She didn’t look like a person who would follow him. She was a human. A human who knew nothing about the realm behind every door.

A human who turned out to be an Era Darkling. A determined, brave, inspirational, stubborn girl who he had trained like a younger sister. The one who made him stay a little longer.

His plan had been perfect. But he hadn’t counted on her arrival. She brought with her strength, bravery, admiration and…guilt. There was a new emotion whenever he fought Balance soldiers. Guilt. Guilty of bringing up a shining Rebellion that would, in the end, fall to dust. Guilty of creating a place where people thought they would find the future’s hope. Guilty of what he knew he would eventually do.

For when the Rebellion needed him most, when his people were counting on him to lead them to victory, he would turn away. Join the enemy. Return to his rightful home, his rightful inheritance. Over her.

He didn’t see her coming.

I’ll Find You (lyrics)

(These are the lyrics to a song)

Seems like the Summer’s falling fast….

Seems like Spring is so far away….

Autumn turns the leaves a golden-brown….

Winter leaves are drifting to the ground.

But there’s something I still have to do,

Before the ice closes in on you.

I’ll chase the day to the edge before I go to sleep….

I’ll find You.

……………….

The Sun, at last, is setting down….

Taking life’s fire….

The Moon will forever stay in the sky….

And the Stars will be a light year journey’s flight.

But there’s something I still have to do,

before the fire melts away from you.

I’ll chase the Sky to the edge before I go to sleep….

I’ll find You.

……………….

Chase the day, reach the sky….

Feel my way through the night….

Before I go

Before I go

I’ll find You.
